The Vashing of the Snamuh

The Snamuh are a species located on a planet system called "Heart." The Snamuh perform many mysterious tasks in order to pressim the other gender of their species. One of their routines really catches my attention and can only make me wonder why they would do this kind of action so frequently. Both the male and females perform this ceremonial custom. The one that catches my attention is called vashing. Both genders perform this on a weekly basis while others repeat this ritual daily.

Vashing involves using a shank. There are multiple kinds of gouges available in exchange for currency. Some contain sharper metal than others, while others have more blades than others. The Snamuh place a paste on their bodies and begin to cut their skin and watch themselves bleed. They use terwa, a form of liquid, to moisturize their wounded areas on their skin. Many of the Snamuh use oils and other objects to help with their pain. The males usually apply this ritual to their face while females gash their legs. The Snamuh perform this action to be socially accepted and to please themselves.

Although most are involved with vashing, many Snamuh do not get involved. Some believe that it is a crime against their own bodies and image. Some think it is wrong, but the majority continue to use this ancient practice. Vashing is used all throughout the system of Heart. Social acceptance, appearance and image are valued very highly on this planet. Cutting themselves is another way for them to display their image, feelings, emotions as well as many other things. This ritual will continue to be performed for many years to come.
