Rituals Kristin Kramer

Halloween- Neewollah

Many different kids of rituals and customs occur on Halloween. Everyone in the American culture gets very excited for this day. However, it depends on the person, the family,  where they live, and how they perceive the day "Halloween". So, what exactly is a ritual? A ritual is a set of actions, which often have symbolic value. Rituals are most well-known in religious practices. A ritual is also known as a custom, ceremony, or procedure.

Not all cultures observe Halloween and not all religions accept Halloween because of its origins.  The way Americans view Modern Halloween rituals have changed, as have the meanings behind them. Costumes for children and kids in this culture have also changed drastically. They are not wearing evil costumes, but now they are choosing their favorite characters in a show or movie. Is this true for everyone? Of course not.

Trick-or-treating is a ritual that will never end. Kids get all dressed up in a frightening costume, wear a scary mask, and get pillow sacks to put candy in. Whether you are four years old, or fourteen years old, kids and young teens are still experiencing the excitement of trick-or-treating every year on Halloween. As you walk outside, you see kids laughing and exchanging candy and treats. This is a ritual that will never end in our culture.

It is interesting to see how Halloween came to be in existence, what rituals are still observed, and what has changed over time. I believe that it just isn't a holiday for kids to put on costumes and trick-or-treat door to door. There is a real history to Halloween and a deeper meaning to its rituals.

This article is well written, however. You could have improved it by going further in depth and deciphering where and how the holiday originated.
Why exactly was Halloween deemed a holiday? Was there something symbolic in relevance that led to it becoming one, or was it just slapped onto the calendar?

I really liked how you gave an intro to Halloween and its background. I liked how you described that the custom will pretty much never end, and I agree with you. I think that you maybe could have gone into a little more detail describing Halloweens event that occur and what people do leading up to the event.

Good job. I think that you did a good job of explaining the holiday but I would have like it if you were more creative and wrote in a "code" so to speak. At the very beginning you wrote "Neewollah" and I think if you wrote describing "Neewollah" instead of Halloween you know? It was still a very good written post. Congrats.
